A Series 50 parallel printer has a 36 pin Centronics connection that secures the data cable with 2 clips and the serial version has a 25-pin D-shell connection that secures the data cable with 2 screws.

Parallel and serial communications are two distinct ways of getting data from a PC to our printer. Serial communication transmits data on only 2 wires, one for sending and one for receiving one bit at a time. Parallel communication transmits data across multiple wires simultaneously.  This provides a faster means of data transmission than serial. A parallel printer must be connected to a parallel port, commonly labeled as an LPT port on a PC. The LPT port should be set for bi-directional, standard, or SPP. A serial printer must be connected to a serial port, commonly labeled as a COM port on a PC. The COM port settings must match the printer serial settings to communicate properly. Please consult your PC’s literature to learn how to change these setting.

The parallel printer uses a parallel (1284 compliant) centronics cable. The serial printer uses a Serial Null Modem cable when connected to a PC, or a serial straight through cable if connected to a dumb terminal. See Data Cable Specifications in the Quick Reference section below.

Use the Generic Text Only driver that is available within the Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.

If it is a parallel printer, be sure the parallel port is set for bi-directional, standard, or SPP. If it is a serial printer, be sure the serial port settings match the printer serial settings.

Your software is probably sending a form feed at the end of each printed document. You may be able to adjust the length of the form feed within your software. If the printer is connected to an AS400, there are settings within the AS400 to adjust the form length.

Try changing the paper size to Envelope in the printer driver properties.

If the problem continues, try changing the Page length to 1 line by entering the following code into the Begin Job section on the Printer Commands tab in the printer driver properties:

If the printer's firmware is PE-0003-XX or PE-0004-XX use:    <1B>F01

                                                               Otherwise use:    &%MF01

 

If your document is printing correctly, you are sending the &%D1, it does not open the cash drawer, and an odd character prints out on the document: On an AS400 terminal version, getting a strange character instead of opening the cash drawer. (looks like a T with to top lines.) It isinterpreting the D1 as hexadecimal and printing out the equivalent ASCII Character.

CHANGE FROM: "&%D1"

TO:"&%&%4431"

On a terminal emulation program on a PC, Use &%D1, with 899 Code page support active.

This is due to specific AS400 interpretation problems.

 

To use Windows printer drivers in a AS400 Print Session the "Transform to ASCII" must be checked.

If no alarm light appears, try the following:

Parallel Version:

1. Be sure the port is set for bi-directional, standard, or SPP.
2. Get to a DOS prompt on your system.
3. Type the following: dir > lpt1 (assuming you on LPT1)
4. If nothing prints and the printer is mechanically functioning, the problem may be the systems parallel port or the data cable.

 

Serial Version:

1. Get to a DOS prompt on your system.
2. Type the following: mode com1:9600,n,8,1 (assuming your on COM1 and the printer settings are 9600,n,8,1)
3. Hit Enter on the keyboard, the above command should display again on the monitor
4. Type the following: dir > com1 (assuming your on COM1)
5. If nothing prints and the printer is mechanically functioning, the problem may be the systems serial port or the data cable.
