Trak Auto Relies On Ithaca® POSjet® 1000 Printer For Its POS Systems

Wallingford, CT - August 29, 2002 - TransAct Technologies Incorporated (NASDAQ: TACT), a leading producer of transaction-based printers for customers worldwide, announces that Trak Auto, a mid-Atlantic retailer of high quality, low-cost auto parts, has installed its Ithaca® brand POSjet® 1000 inkjet printer as its POS (point-of-sale) printer of choice in its 80 stores.

Based on the quality reputation of the Ithaca brand, the POSjet® was selected for its reliability, ease of use, and flexibility with programming, according to Trak Auto's Director of Information Technology, Dave Stickney.

Speed, reliability, inventory control and fraud protection are critical to the operation of a discount auto parts business. Trak Auto configured a POS system to meet all four criteria, featuring a serial terminal; cash drawers from Indiana Cash Drawer; credit card readers, check readers, hand held scanners and Ithaca POSjet® inkjet printers.

"There is a high volume of daily transactions in the auto parts retail environment," said Dave Stickney. "Some stores can reach about 800 transactions per day, and because many sales are credit card sales requiring duplicate receipts, upwards of 1300 receipts are generated. We needed to find a printer that would be a workhorse, and deliver consistent quality without downtime," he continued. "I had used Ithaca Series 50 impact printers in previous installations and was pleased with their reliability and durability. While looking at what was new in point-of-sale hardware, I discovered the Ithaca POSjet®, which offered the same reliability and was extremely cost effective for us in terms of the upfront cost as well as the ongoing total cost of ownership."

"Because a high percentage of homes have inkjet printers, most people are familiar with the snap-in/snap-out ink cartridge. And the paper loading is very simple. This made the POSjet® extremely easy to use by employees, and downtime virtually non-existent," said Stickney. The POSjet®'s user-friendly, automatic paper loading system, Insta-Load®, reduces the downtime involved with changing paper rolls.

"The POSjet® also met the demands of the asset protection department," reported Stickney. "Receipt forgeries are a major concern in retail. We utilize pre-printed, heat sensitive paper that the POSjet® accommodates easily. In addition, our asset management team was thrilled with our ability to accommodate new security features in the software overnight," continued Stickney. "The POSjet®'s flexibility to print on various mediums and its ability to easily integrate with existing software helped us to accomplish that."

Previously, Trak Auto utilized an integrated system employing impact printers. The new POS system represented a 75% savings in capital costs. The proprietary ASAT POS software developed by Trak Auto's IT team operates on a distributed post-relational database system called UniVision from Via Systems on Red Hat Linux. As a result, Trak Auto saves nearly $31,000 per month in communications, hardware, and support costs. Each retail outlet has at least two POS terminals, and some up to four.

Mark Bauer, Vice President Sales Americas, TransAct Technologies, said, "We're proud to have our POSjet® printers selected based on the reputation of the Ithaca brand, and are confident that they will live up to that reputation and deliver real value, providing Trak Auto with unparalleled reliability in a receipt printer that easily meets the challenges of the high volume retail environment."

The Ithaca POSjet® combines Hewlett-Packard's world-class inkjet technology with TransAct's expertise in the POS market to deliver a custom business solution that not only meets the functional demands of the POS market, but also transforms receipts into cost effective marketing vehicles. The POSjet®'s HP inkjet cartridges print an average of 7 million characters, for high-volume, low-replacement usage. Cartridges are available in red, blue, green and black quick-drying ink, for custom color combinations on demand. Simply pick any two colors, at any time.
